Garmin Forerunner 310XT GPS Enabled Sports Watch with Heart Rate Monitor

Great Price "Garmin Forerunner 310XT GPS Enabled Sports Watch with Heart Rate Monitor" for $339.99 Today

GENERAL/RUNNING/BIKING:

Pros: - The watch is easy to set up out of the box. ANT+ pairing is quick and simple, and the online tools are much improved from previous editions.
- Display is customizable, with up to 4 items per screen with easy scrolling to another screen with different layout and information. You can include pace, heart rate, heart rate map, caloric burn, time, distance and several other options (those are the ones I use).
- Auto-multisport allows for pre-programmed hot swapping between sport modes (i.e. bike to run to "other") by pressing the lap button.
- The watch also includes a virtual "rabbit" (a.k.a. pace maker) that will simulate a preset pace and tell you how far ahead or behind that pace you are. Awesome in-training motivation!
- The watch also tracks your individual fitness once you enter your height, weight and fitness level. You can even pair it with the Tanita BC-1000 scale and have it automatically update this information wirelessly through that scale. Haven't tried this myself, but it sounds sweet.
- People complain about OTHER mode being on the options menu, but as someone who also snowboards and windsurfs I appreciate Garmin expanding this watch's functionality beyond the three triathlete sports (see SWIMMING section below)
- There are several other features and options you can customize here, but those are the primary ones I use.

Cons: - The watch works very well in the trees, but not so much on switchbacks. If you like running or biking switchbacks, the GPS mapping mode does not interpret these very well and will likely cut off some distance on your route. The Forerunner 305 is better in this regard.
- Elevation accuracy has a lot of noise, and goes from mediocre to worthless on your route. This isn't a big deal for me, as I'm familiar with the elevation of the routes I run, but it would be irritating for serious users of the elevation feature.
- The watch and PC software are not forgiving if you don't set it up correctly prior to the workout. If you change modes mid-workout outside of the pre-programmed hotswapping it drops any previous data rather than appending the old data to the beginning of your new workout. I found this shortcoming reading other reviews and then testing it myself. Just be sure you set the watch up correctly prior to training and you'll be fine.

SWIMMERS/TRIATHLETES: Before you read any other reviews, there are some basic facts about GPS and ANT+ technology you have to understand before you set your triathlete expectations about this or any similar watch. GPS and ANT+ signals do not penetrate water effectively. You are not going to find an ANT+ HRM that works well submerged until they upgrade the ANT+ standard, and until the government switches out the orbiting satellites, GPS will simply not work when you are submerged.

That said, if you wear this watch in the back of your swim cap facing the sky, the GPS is a lot more functional. DC Rainmaker does some great testing ([...]) that demonstrates how the 305 and 310XT both fare in GPS tracking using this technique. The short answer is "It actually works pretty darn well." If you want a good, aquatic HRM, I recommend the FINIS Aqua Pulse ([...]). Garmin did not include a dedicated SWIM mode, because it understood the tech's aquatic limitations, and before you buy any product you should understand those limitations as well.

Great Watch, IF.... - June Bug - Merriam, KS
You never intend on parting a woman's legs. Nothing says "Im a doosh-bag" like wearing a watch the size of f-ing pop tart. This is the equivalent of wearing a kick me sign.

Take it from June Bug, PIMPS know where the local hourly hotels are, you dont need a GPS.

Perfect - E. B. Junior - Brazil
Perfect. Ease of use but needs a best owners guide and the software in disk.

Suunto X10M Wrist-Top GPS Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and GPS Review

I used this watch for 2 weeks in the outback. It was charged in the U.S. before the trip. Battery lasted for all two weeks on full charge, even though I kept playing with it and trying out most of the settings in Australia. Got signal even under trees, of course, no dense jungles in the outback. Temperature ranged from 35C (120F) daytime to 8C (44F) nighttime.

At home, in the temperate U.S. zone, did I not get any signal in my office building (30 ft from nearest windows, two stories below top of building. At my apt, did not get all the satellites since I faced only northeast direction. Close to the window, however, the watch received about 6 or so.

Had fun using the watch for those two weeks, but it's so obviously built for men (non-flexible portion of watch measures 2.5") that I'll probably never use it again unless in the wilderness.

Specifications

Small and lightweight, the Suunto X10M wrist-top computer watch combines an altimeter, barometer, compass, and GPS navigator, making it a terrific companion for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. The X10M--which builds on Suunto's decade of experience in creating cutting-edge outdoor devices--stands above most other wrist-top computers thanks to its improved, faster GPS fixes. Even under heavy foliage, you can use the X10M to plot your treks, navigate to a certain spot, or get back to your car, all while keeping your hands free to hold a hiking stick or water bottle. Once back at home, you can share your treks on Google Earth, or use the Suunto Trek Manager PC software to create new routes and plan new journeys.

The Suunto X10M also includes a built-in altimeter, which displays your current altitude and your vertical ascent and descent rate. Accurate to within 30,000 feet, the altimeter is an extremely valuable tool for mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and wilderness travel. The altimeter contributes to your excursion in several ways. If you're standing on or near an obvious geographic feature, such as a ridge, trail, or creek, the altimeter can alert you to your current elevation and help you find your position on a topographic map. Similarly, if you plan on climbing a slope to a certain elevation and then traversing, the X10M can help you stay on course. And, of course, the X10M captures all your altitude information in its integrated logbook, making it easy to analyze your performance when creating a training routine.

The Suunto X10M watch includes an altimeter, barometer, compass, and GPS navigator.
The X10M's barometer, meanwhile, measures and records air pressure to help you predict changing conditions--from sunny skies to hair-bending electrical storms. The barometer helps you decide whether to bring a soft shell or rain shell jacket when the skies look ominous, or even when to high-tail it back to the car. In general, low pressure brings inclement weather, while high pressure brings stability and clear skies. If you've arrived at camp and notice the pressure starting to plunge, it's probably a good idea to secure the tent and crawl in. Likewise, if you're on a climb, it would be prudent to find shelter and retreat. Even at home, the X10M's barometer can look beyond office walls, skyscrapers, and nearby hills to help you plan for upcoming activities.

And no outdoor watch is worth its salt without a digital compass, a great tool for keeping track of your direction while skiing, hiking, or exploring a new city. Simply point the top of the watch toward your intended destination and lock it in. Other features include an Activity Mode that records your speed, distance, and altitude information, along with any memory points you define along the way; a Track Back mode that guides you back the same way you came; a long-lasting battery; up to 50 routes, 25 tracks, and 500 waypoints; water-resistance up to 330 feet; and all the standard watch functions, including a 12/24-hour display, a stopwatch, a calendar clock, and three daily alarms. As with all Suunto wrist-top computers, the X10M carries a two-year warranty.

About Suunto
Suunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering enthusiast, Tuomas Vohlonen, who had long been bothered by a problem: the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and their lack of steady needle operation. Being an engineer with an inventive turn of mind, he discovered and patented the production method for a much steadier needle, better readings, and a new level of accuracy.

By 1950 the company was exporting compasses to over 50 countries around the world, including Canada and the United States. In 1952, Helsinki was hosting the Olympic Games, and the torches carried to light the Olympic flame were Suunto products. The next step was improving the stability and accuracy of marine compasses. The first marine compass, the Suunto K-12, was launched onto the market in 1953. In 1957, Suunto started manufacturing hypsometers, which measure the height of trees.

In the 1960s, the compass range grew further and Suunto introduced its first diving compass--initiated by the divers themselves. A British sports diver attached a Suunto compass to his wrist and found that the device also worked underwater. Thanks to his feedback and initiatives, the new business category was found. Suunto's exports and business grew steadily and Suunto then focused on combining its strength in precision mechanics with new skills in electronics. Accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness have been Suunto's key values from the very beginning of the company history.

Today, Suunto is a leading designer and manufacturer of sports instruments for training, diving, mountaineering, hiking, skiing, sailing, and golf. True to its roots, Suunto is today the world's biggest compass manufacturer. Prized for their design, accuracy and dependability, Suunto sports instruments combine the aesthetics and functionality of watches with sport-specific computers that help athletes at all levels analyze and improve performance. Headquartered in Vantaa, Finland, Suunto employs more than 500 people worldwide and distributes its products to nearly 60 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Helsinki-based Amer Sports Corporation with the sister brands Wilson, Salomon, Atomic, Precor, and Mavic.

X10 M A Great Watch for Military - C. Gray - Somewhere
I have recently ordered this watch after great reviews from friends. The watch does have a few flaws, such as the front cover plate falling off after a few months use, but if you go to the Suunto forums, there is a fix for this, I used it and have had no problems.

I have been using the GPS in MGRS mode and have had better than expected results. The track log is very accurate and downloads easily to Google Maps, which is great for archiving your movements. For the size of the GPS it is extremely accurate. I would never use this to call for fire, but definitely a great backup for hiking, emergency's or just verifying distance.

Garbage - Michael E. Thomsen - Davenport, IA USA
I owned a Vector for at least 10 years and am having to go back to it as Suunto has had my X 10 more than I have over the last 8 months. I have sent it in twice the last time in Nov for the case coming apart. First time button cover came off. Cannot believe I paid 0 for this. Makes me question Suunto.

Garmin Forerunner 301 GPS Personal Training Device Review

I have been wanting to purchase a Garmin Forerunner. I looked at all the different units available and compaired different evaluations on all the Forerunners from a different website and saw that overall this unit was rated highly by its users. I LOVE this GPS!!!

So far - ease of use, the features offered are easy to access, and this product included a CD to load the proper program on my computer. The sync process is easy and the graphics on the program show me where I need to improve. I haven't utilized the heartrate monitor yet so I will not be rating this.

Overall I am very please with the Garmin Forerunner 301.

Like the Forerunner 201, the 301 also doubles as a basic navigator. You can mark your starting point as a specific location, see your current position on the plotter display, and follow an electronic breadcrumb trail back to your starting point. Garmin FR60 Women's Black Fitness Watch Bundle (Includes Foot Pod, Heart Rate Monitor, and USB ANT Stick)

Garmin FR60 Women's Black Fitness Watch Bundle (Includes Foot Pod, Heart Rate Monitor, and USB ANT Stick) Review

I have been using this watch/footpod/HR monitor now for about 6 months and I absolutely love it. It is like having a coach. I am a fairly new runner and completed a half marathon this past spring and loved it. I decided to get more serious about my training and run a fall marathon. The longer runs were really a pain because I'd have to get in my car and drive the route each time....and then remember them as I ran . And of course if an unpredicted problem came up (angry dog, suspicious person, etc) I couldn't really deviate without blowing the run and not knowing how far I'd gone . And also......my paces were off. I was running my recovery runs and easy runs WAY too fast. And then at the time I was using an old treadmill that was totally off pace, so my faster runs---well, who knows how consistent they were. I needed help !

And I got it. Everything fell completely into place after getting the watch. It basically sets ITSELF up,too. So easy to use. The Garmin website is awesome. I understand they had bugs at first, but I have encountered none of that. I can look at a run and see my heart rate and pace on a graph. I can also see reports on mileage, etc. And the ability to see cadence per mile is cool, too. I have learned so much by having all this data. It has made me a much better runner. I pay attention to heart rate now, too.

And of course it is wonderful to be able to track my distance and pace as I run outdoors. I can just take whatever direction I want now....I feel totally free and spontaneous out there. And I use it on the treadmill, too. Way more accurate than the treadmill as far as pace is concerned.
I also run in a lot of trees, which is why I avoided the GPS version. The footpod works everywhere and GPS will lose way points in heavy trees or in a city with tall buildings.

It coached me to a 4:14:01 first marathon finish this past October. It is really accurate and I have never calibrated it. Although I plan to go to an indoor track this week and do that this week before I start training seriously again (I wore it in the marathon and it tracked the the distance as 26.58---not bad over that many miles with no additional calibration, but still.....).

I highly recommend this product to anyone who would like to be able to monitor their training. It is all they say and a lot more. I plan to try to qualify for Boston this spring and I know my chances are much improved with my Garmin FR60 (yes, all my friends are definitely tired of hearing how much I love the watch!).

Better luck second time around - Danna Beaty - Stephenville, TX
I received this watch for Christmas and was enthusiastic about the prospect of tracking and improving my fitness performance. I had a bit of difficulty deciphering how to operate the watch based on the user manual. It definitely needs some work. However, the Garmin website provided detailed videos on the watch features and how to program. VERY helpful! I am still unsure if there is a way to adjust for elevation while on the treadmill... The mode button was not easy to use from the beginning and then on January 28th, the watch quit working altogether. I called Garmin and their suggestion was to send the watch in and they would send me a "refurbished" watch to replace it. This is unacceptable for a watch as new and costly as this one was. Finally, I contacted the store--Clever Trainer--from where the watch shipped and they immediately agreed to replace it with a new one. I did have to pay to ship it to them, but am happy to find myself with a new watch instead of a refurbished one. So far, so good!

It's just "OK." - A. Burns - Maryland
As a competitive runner, I was really looking forward to a smaller watch for women. In that aspect, this is great. My one real compliant, is that this is a non-GPS watch. Meaning the Foot-Pod is guessing your distance. You are supposed to "Calibrate" it for distance every so often. I ran a half marathon last November. While I know the course was 13.1 miles, the watch read 14.65 miles. Being so far off course can really mess up your training. I am now looking into GPS models.

Garmin 405 No HRM Monitor Review

I've loved having this watch. I really like knowing how fast and how far I've gone on my runs. The heart rate monitor is an added bonus. The GPS is always exactly accurate when compared to my car's odometer or when running on a track.

Some people have said they've had problems with the touch bezel when it gets wet or when hands are sweaty but I haven't had any trouble at all (not even when it was raining). It always works for me every time. I would recommend this watch to anybody - I love it.

Garmin 405 - Jon - Kansas
First time using a gps device and couldn't be happier. It completely liberated my running and I now look forward to my runs and exploring new areas off the beaten path. I would recommend this product to all level of runners. The bezel is great and has not given me any of the problems that others have mentioned.

IRONMAN Trail Runner® Body Link®

IRONMAN Trail Runner® Body Link® Review

Just received this item (bought on EBAY). Simply incredible value for the cost (I paid around 0 for watch, GPS, HRM, GPS, and data recorder).

I considered Suunto, Polar, Garmin, and this Timex. Can't speak about the others but I am SO glad I chose this one. I am a military officer who trains pretty hard (running, ruck march, hiking, biking) and can't believe how much better training is with this device. Pace count and predictive finish take all the guess work out of training. Upload the data to the computer when I'm done and I can see precise routing, pace, elevation, speed, heart rate...at any point or time along my run. Looking forward to putting it on the motorcycle so I can go home after and overlay the exact ride route on a map and see where the heck I just rode.

IRONMAN Trail Runner® Body Link® Features

Never leave home without it! - B. Nieves -
This is actually my third bodylink system (the second Trail style). The first one I lost after replacing the batteries and not noticing that the gasket did not seal propertly (my bad). The second one is the one I currently use, and I do not go out running without it. The third one, for my son who now shares my running passion. I just ran the Triple Lakes Marathon with it. This watch keeps me motivated and informed of my heartrate, speed, etc. I highly recommend this one (Watch, GPS and Heartrate band)

Simply the best - DONT LOOK ELSEWHERE - Anand SK - India
I cycle long distance, hike, jog, walk and do other stuff regularly. This watch and it's components are just amazing. I did my 2 day research on what to buy - studied Garmin and other options. But this device should beat them all. The data that is recorded is amazing. The GPS is bloody accurate and picks up signals quickly. Even if you walk at 1 mile/hour speed, it picks up the data and records it faithfully. You cant ask for more, and you dont need more. In such a compact device, if they can give so much - hats off to Timex.

Timex Ironman T5J985 Unisex Trail Runner Bodylink Heart Rate Monitor Watch

I read all the reviews here and echo them - this watch is great. It lets you run without worrying about a route...just run and let the GPS calculate how far you've gone.

Another neat feature is the hands-free. I set it and it logs the split times at every lap. Great feature.

I checked Ebay, and found one new for 5, so check there if you're looking for a deal. Ebay, of course, is hit or miss, and there is more risk involved.

The Night Mode feature allows you to illuminate the Indiglo night-light for 3 seconds with any button press, regardless of the mode or function. The watch is water resistant to 50 meters (165 feet)--suitable for swimming but not for diving--and the GPS sensor is splash resistant. All Timex heart rate monitor sensors have batteries that can be replaced by consumers without requiring them to be returned to the manufacturer.

Customer Review

GPS reception is very poor - Running Man - Houston
I bought the watch a week before the Houston Marathon, primarily for the GPS functionality and the design. I tried the watch out the night before, and got a signal. However, I tried to get a signal during the marathon, on a clear sunny day with no obstructions and didn't once get a signal. Very frustrating. I've tried several runs subsequent to the marathon and never got another signal. I'm returning the watch.

Very nice except for clunky armband GPS - World Traveller - CT USA
I bought this product along with competing models from Garmin, Polar, and Suunto. I wanted to check 'em all out, and I very nearly kept this one and sent the rest back. In the end, I went with the Garmin, and very happy I did. Look for my review there (click on my name to see my other reviews).

Timex is a watch company, and you can tell, because it had by far the best looking and most watch-savvy model of the group. That almost had me sold. Its watch fit on my small wrist, too, which was nice.

But what killed the deal for me was the GPS unit. I decided I really need GPS for tracking where I've been and how far I've gone. There are two problems with Timex' GPS solution:

- the hardware: Timex' GPS is a separate unit strapped to your arm that contains three AAA batteries that run out of juice after 8-12 hours. It's a battery hog. The door of this little plastic GPS thing was so hard to close - I'm not kidding, a really bad fit - I almost returned it for that. So, hit or miss on the manufacturing. That GPS is a third-party unit that both Polar and Timex use, so they're the same. Problem is that unloading and reloading the batteries every few runs will get to be a hassle. And, you look plain silly running down the road with that thing on your arm. The Garmin unit contains it all right inside the watch itself. So superior.

- the software: If you're interested in downloading (uploading) your workouts into your PC and analyzing your total miles, calories, and actually seeing your route overlaid on a map, it will require a lot of steps for you and a little PC savvy to do it with the Timex and Polar solutions. I didn't even look at Suunto's, because their GPS solution was way out of my price range. Garmin's software is so easy - read my review and you'll see.

But, if you don't need GPS, this would have been a super watch for training purposes.

Garmin FR60 Women's Lilac Fitness Watch (Includes Heart Rate Monitor and USB ANT Stick)

I have owned several heart rate monitors over the years. I have recently begun working with a trainer on my strength and fitness. I was looking for a watch that would easily let me see how my pulse had varied throughout our workouts. All the watches show your current heart rate, but with this one, you can download the data into your computer and see a graph of exactly how your heart rate varied throughout the activity.
For me this watch with its accompanying strap and ANT stick is exactly what I was looking for.

Initial set-up of the watch was easy. With only a few buttons, all of these watches require that you read the instructions, but once you have done so, it is relatively simple. I am a Mac user, and was able to download the Garmin ANT Agent, and Garmin Training Center and install them without any problems.
The watch was immediately recognized and transferred the data across.

The software shows a graph of heart rate versus time, and will even let you set markers at points on the graph and display the times, time interval and pulse rate difference between them. This is really neat if you are interested in seeing how your heart rate recovery is. Just set one point on the peak heart rate, and then put the second one 60 seconds later and you get an immediate read out of the number of beats per minute your heart rate has dropped in that minute. So much better to be able to go back and do this at your leisure than worrying about it in the middle of a workout.

I need glasses to read, but the display is large enough that I have no difficulty in reading the pulse rate on the display while working out.

As others have said, being able to change the batteries in the strap yourself is a big plus over some other models.

I don't know about the more sophisticated functions like zones and pacing as I am not interested in using them, but for what I want the watch for, it is fantastic. Sharing the graphs with my trainer has given him a new way of looking at how he structures the workouts.

Train Indoors or Out
In the gym or on the road, FR60 tracks all your workout data, including time, heart rate, calories burned, lap times and averages, and more. FR60 boasts advanced training tools, such as training alarms and Virtual Partner, which lets you race against a virtual training partner to improve your performance.

At the heart of its success is FR60's wireless ANT+ technology, which allows it to connect to other ANT+ compatible devices, like the included heart rate monitor, optional foot pod, or even ANT+ compatible fitness equipment.

Go for Distance
With the ANT+ seamless wireless link, FR60 connects to the optional wireless foot pod, which tracks your distance and speed effortlessly, both indoors and out. Using advanced accelerometer technology, the foot pod collects and sends precise data about your movements, gathering distance and speed data that is 98 percent accurate, right out of the box.

Listen to Your Heart
FR60 also connects wirelessly to a lightweight, flexible digital heart rate monitor, providing instant feedback about how hard you're working. FR60 continuously tracks heart beats per minute and displays your heart rate zone, so you can monitor and improve your fitness level.

Cross-Train
When paired with an optional speed/cadence sensor, FR60 tracks the speed and distance of your cycling workouts. The wireless speed/cadence sensor attaches securely to your bike and measures your pedaling cadence and wheel speed as you ride. You can even use it to train indoors because the sensor attaches to your rear wheel.

Sync and Share
Once you've logged the miles, FR60 automatically transfers data to your PC or Mac, wirelessly when in range. No cables, no hookups. The data is just there, ready for you to analyze, categorize and share through our online community, Garmin Connect.

Males and females may train alike, but they have different preferences when it comes to watch styling. So, Garmin offers a men’s and women’s version of FR60 that differs only in size and color options. The men’s model, which weighs 1.6 ounces, comes in black or red on black. Wonderful Training Device - A. Ratner - Princeton, NJ
After much research, I decided on this watch (along with the optional Garmin foot pod) to help me train for my first half marathon. I'm 2 weeks away from the big race and this watch has been an invaluable training tool. Unlike some other reviewers, I think the watch is a breeze to use--if you have any questions just go to the Garmin website and check out the short training videos. The accuracy of the foot pod is spot on and I ilke that I can use the watch both outdoors and in the gym running on a treadmill. I tend to run at a faster pace than I should, so having access to a real-time display of my current running pace allows me to maintain the correct pace at all times. The watch is comfortable (quite a bit smaller than the GPS watches I've seen) and it's a treat to have your workout data automatically and wirelessly upload to Garmin's training programs (through the ANT stick). For the money, I don't think there's another fitness watch that combines the form, functionality and price of the Garmin FR60.

love it - K. Brown - NY
I just purchased the FR60 in lilac for myself (and the men's version for my husband). Currently we are using them for high intensity interval training. The set-up was a breeze. After researching several watches I chose these based on features, price, and brand. A must for us was to be able to upload the data to our computer and graph our heart rates for the intervals. Once we set up this feature using the ANT stick (which was a three step process completely outlined on the garmin website), we were able to do this. It's awesome. After a workout I just walk into our office and within 30 seconds a box pops up on my computer asking if i'd like to see the data online.

We chose these Garmin watches over similarly functioning and priced Polar watches due to the wireless capability. For the polar watches you have to buy an additional module that you physically have to place the watch on to upload the data. I know it sounds lazy, but I prefer to just leave my sweaty watch on my wrist!

Lastly, I was concerned if the watch would fit me correctly since i have rather petite wrists. No problems there. Yes, it's bigger than my normal day-to-day watch, but i like having the larger screen to glance on while I workout.
